Have you tried promoting your community via YouTube.com? Meaning uploaded videos about your niche and added your site link to them. If so, has anyone joined from youtube? What suggestions would you give others when trying to promote with youtube or another video site?
I've seen people try this, but I don't think it ever works very successfully. Unless you have a sound content generating part to your website/blog - where you report news or give reviews for example, where you can post your videos up and use them to link to your forum, I don't think they can ever really work :/
YouTube is never a good idea to use for promotions, one you have people there looking for funny videos or uploading their own, they have no interest in promotional videos. Two YouTube will take your video down at the first complaint about it. So I choose to make my own embedded videos, and what I suggest to others is to look for sites that will allow you to post it on their site or have them put it up in an ad spot. Of course there might be a small fee but when isn't there.
I think my weather forum could have success with it for like storm chasing videos and what not, even my paranormal forum but I think its a niche-based ad method, depends on what you community is about really...
There is nothing wrong with using YouTube for promotions, because everyone flocks to it, it is an ideal platform.
I think if you have a definite idea for a video advertisement in mind and you have a niche where it's applicable - then youtube could be a brilliant medium for promoting a site.
