So here I am mainly posting about the things I like about xenforo so I thought I'd post about my dislike of the notice system included in xenforo 1.1.0. It's not a complaint, but a valid concern I have with the "how it was design" implementation. Automated scrolling - Why? this has got to be my biggest gripe with the notice system, not only is this irritating it's gimiky and affects other issues I have with the notice system. I personally think that tabbed (multiple tabs showing) implementation if multiple notices are displayed in the same location is enough and conveys across that you have multiple notices quite sufficiently. In my mind, automated scrolling was never needed even as an option imo. The dreaded multiple line count difference in multiple notices - Let's say I have two notices displaying in the same area with notice 1 having 30 lines of text & notice 2 having 5 the notice with 5 lines of text will be expanded to the same height as the notice that uses 3o lines of text causing vasts amount of whitespace. Why is this so? so automated notices don't jump from one size to another which is why I feel the automated scrolling system was a bad idea. This alone stops me having mutiple notices in the same location if they don't happen to be roughly the same in size (height). I think a nice alternative option is to think of the people that don't use the automated scrolling feature to be allowed to have their notices displayed at a height size of the notice not by the largest notice height in that area. Your board is offline - Your forum is offline and the first thing you'll see is the off line "re-open your forum via admincp" notice. Why can't this be disabled? And an issue i had was that when I tried styling a custom notice and viewing the changes it would always revert back to the offline your board is closed noticed. There's a host of other issues I have with it but they aren't major to the point it drives me away from using them. What are your thoughts on the notice system? have you warmly welcomed this feature and don't see an issue with it? Feel free to discuss your experiences and thoughts regarding the xenforo notices and perhaps show some screenshots of your custom notices.
Another major issue. I have automated scrolling switched off. I figured it was a margin problem (unless I'm missing something) but anyone else experiencing the tabs separating on the shortest notice if they have multiple notices displaying in the same location?
Automatic notice scrolling looks cool as an effect, but it's one of those things that can fast become annoying and even turn your visitors away. I use it as a static notice still, a single line message that's more user friendly for reading. There's also a problem with it scrolling too fast in some browsers when using the scrolling option with it.
I do the same as you and just have a single notice per page at any time so there isnt any scrolling etc I dont like the scrolling much at all, I have never liked jquery sliders when used for gallerys and whatnot too so it could have stemmed from that.
That really doesn't help me or others I'm afraid. My developer has offered to fix the sidebar add-on but out of principle I don't see why it should be fixed I'm wanting people to see what are the negatives about this poorly, thought out notice system is and why it conflicts with just about everything. Now, judging by the two responses and I suspect there are going to be more people whom do the same and that is limit notices displayed in the same area to one rather than have multiple notices, which is rather sad and shows that the system restricts people from using wanting to implement multiple notices in the same area. Are you one of those people that like to fully customise your notice system? and want multiple notices with animations switched off? be prepared to deploy some dirty unnecessary fixes which I had to implement yesterday. The system is very user unfriendly and as more people attempt to customise their notices using multiple notices in the same areas they will see the issues. I'm seeing those issues now because I've jumped into the feature and heavily customising the notices. Let's not forget the fact that multiple notices have to be nearly the same size otherwise your multiple tabs will be separated from one of the notices in that area, sometimes both if you have more than 2. There's a host of other issues that are mindblowing i found yesterday but I'll need to re-visit this thread later and note them down. What amazes me is how these issues even made it this far and it seems that the system was designed for people whom don't customise notices. We'll i'm not one of those people and since I explore all areas to style and style extensively I'll always post my approval of a feature if it's good and if it happens to be terrible (which the notice system is) it'll get the same reception. Like I've said many times it's nothing more than a glorified marquee in it's current state.
After fighting with the notice system for a good portion of the day I thought I'd post the notices (customised) with the fixes I made so it doesn't look like I'm venting about the notice system. As you can see on one of the notices there's a gap at the bottom due to the amount of lines differing and the notice with the shortest amount of lines inherits the height of the notice with the most amount of lines of text so there's a gap at the bottom i can do nothing about. So be warned when creating multiple notices displayed in the same area and you'll just have to compromise and juggle with the decision whether you want multiple notices displaying with these issues.
I unticked "Show notice content wrapper" or whatever it is, and this was the result: I still see a wrapper. That outline is not in my code. Doesn't do what it says it will. Why is there whitespace below my nice notice. It's silly...
The whole thing is silly. You may need to go into the style properties >> notices and adjust the padding settings. I do vaguely remember doing something in there as I disable the content wrapper myself. Like I mentioned, I do vaguely remember going in there and doing something but lost track with the amount of unnecessary fixes I have to make to get the notices functioning correctly.
Ah, that's sorted it. Went into the Style Properties and just blanked them all out. Still doesn't hide the fact that I ticked for it to not use the wrapper and it still did, but oh well. I can only ever imagine me using the notice system for that one notice to guests. I doubt I'll use it for anything else so this suits me fine. Thanks for the reminder!
Yeah, that large white-space gap at the bottom is a bit horrid, why is that happening? That should be flush so it all looks neat with a border wrapped around all 4 sides showing no white-space.
You already know I completely agree about the issues with the notice system, but the only choices I have are to either work around it and make things work as best I can with what I have, or to re-do it somehow. After I get this first version of my framework out, I'm probably going to look at working on the notice system (template wise as much as possible) so it makes it a bit easier to style on the designers end.
If the autoscroll had an opt-in for users instead of having to hack an opt-out by admins, it likely wouldn't make me feel quite so schizoid looking at it go (although forced on us or option, it just goes too bloody fast!!!!). That's just a must for me and I have them turned off until then (which is unfortunate, because if they were just static and they did resize I could use them for some nifty stuff in developing my new forum).
All those feedback should really get posted on the XenForo forums.. as I absolutely agree. One more thing, it should be a option to show notices at top of each other, instead of using the tabs.
It's not my problem or desire to provide feedback or suggestions. If the developers feel this marquee system is the best thing sinced slice bread then so be it. I'll probably start suggesting when/if I purchase a bigboard database.
Need to do more testing and it appears that the toggle sidebar is working in xenforo 1.1.0 beta 5 with notices expanding/contracting without any issues. Previously, they would repeat themselves (pending your using a sidebar toggle add-on). Still doing more tests but so far so good. A step forward and one of the major issues I had with it now resolved. Still many more but it's a step forward. Edit: Using multiple notices in the same location still results in notice1 not expanding correctly with notice2 partially exposing itself.
Just a headsup. If you've customised your notices, upgraded to 1.1.0 beta 5 and seeing a scrollbar on the right handside of your notice you may need to go check in your Style Properties >> Notices & modifiy/remove the height which is set to 100px and leave the field empty.
Just wondering Shelley, did they take anything you said about the notices and change it for the "gold" release of 1.1.0?
As far as I know, they haven't. I'll need to check when I upgrade later to "gold" and test the glorified marquee system.
