I don't believe in a bad niche, I think we talk about BAD ADMINS. Whether it's a competitive niche or one with 2 sites, a forum is made or broken by the admin. I dislike default designs, bad designs, no activity, admins that don't care or spam the living soul out of every other forum, trying to pull some members. If you are a professional and make sure you behave like this everywhere, if your forum looks good and has excellent content, you can enter ANY niche and you'll succeed. Of course some niches are not easy to establish yourself in (such as the admin niche), but if you're doing it well, time will show you did something good ;)

If you run a tech forum and you need to pick sides (ati/amd vs nvidia or amd vs intel, etc) but don't be a douchebag about it.

I adminned a couple rival tech forums and wow stuff got ugly as well. I was torn between the two so make sure you don't let one know about the other if you admin/moderate two rival tech forums. I ended up quitting both and watching them both burn. I will only ever consider admin/gmodding on one that is laid back. Some of the people that were in my forums were making me use my ban hammer too much. I facepalmed before it was a meme at some of the users I had there.

There are far too many idiots who think they know tech, but don't. I especially love making the "experts" who just finished an A+ or Networking+ course cry.

Any tech forum that polarizes towards one specific solution, whether it be AMD, Intel, nVIdia, etc. deserves to fail.

The ones I ran were general tech forums that covered anything from GPUs to web hosting. Not geared towards any particular brand.

The wars came from some members of one hated some members of another and often those that got banned from one would go to the other and start crap and I would ban them.

Tech wars are stupid, everyone knows Trash 80s are as good as it gets.

On a serious note, I've hung around a few tech forums. Most of the "wars" were good discussion back in the day, each side might be blinded by brand loyalty but both sides would claim this and that and eventually you could work out which was the best bang for the buck. Now-a-days it just seems like people don't want to put any effort into their wars, instead they just go straight to insulting the other party. Turns into "X is the best because I said so".
