When thinking about a new domain name, usually the first suggestion is to keep it short, but with short domains (that make sense) being harder and harder to come by nowadays, when you're thinking about starting a new site what do you look for in your domain names?

I still like to keep things short, but when that's not possible I have a tendency to make things up hehehe... like my blog for example is Whimpulsive - a combination of whim and impulsive. What's your thinking for new domains?

I'm not a huge fan of domain names which contain the word 'forum' but I can see how it's useful, I like a site to have its own identity without that suffix. (regardless of my own history on that front with thediscussionforum.com :p) I also don't like there to be any extra symbols/punctuation in a domain name (er, again regardless to the fact I had startrek-online.net)... I'm not doing very well here am I?

I look for it being short - and how easier to remember - that way people can just type my site in and find it. I rarely buy domains though.

I look for short keyword rich .com domain names. If I find a good niche in the domain name, then I will buy the duplicate domain TLD of .net and .org (and sometimes others) and forward them to the .com one. If I find a very keyword rich longer domain name, I usually will snatch it. I just went through a list of 264 domain names that I have registered and have decided to only keep about 75 of them, lol.

I stay away from misspelling in domains, hyphens, profanity, sexual content and numbers. To me domains will any of that are usually spam sites and I refuse to visit them, so I don't want my domains saw the same.

I also try to have my domains straight to the point of the niche... for example, I own a forum for Skywarn storm storm spotters. The domain is SkywarnForum.com I also own a forum for storm chasers, its domain is StormChaserForum.com The domains in my opinion are keyword rich and to the point.
