Have you ever had a situation where because of member opinion you've had to remove a member of staff?

No, not yet. It's a situation I go out of my way to avoid so I'm extremely careful about promoting anyone. That's probably why I spend far more time than I should do looking after my boards :D

Long time ago, I run an admin forum called Forum Seed. If anyone here remembers it, I am impressed lol. Anyways, I hired a 13 year old to help me admin it. He would attempt to overpower me. People once complained that the required character limit was too high (it was 30 chars I think) so I made it 0 to set a no limit policy. The admin said no and set it to 1 and then told me we have to have it at least set to 1. I listened and a lot of members left because I allowed him to walk on my authority. I ended up terminating him and most of the members came back.

That is the reason why I am iffy about hiring anyone that young again. No offense to you kids that are not like that but it was the circumstance that made me think twice about it and I am a bit old fashion...

It would probably be for the better in our past if certain people had been dismissed as such, but no, we haven't. We're highly hierarchical, though, so the mandates are rather top-down (and the other admins tend to handle the administrivia while I handle development and setting those mandates).

I still do spend an inordinate amount of time documenting the rationale behind decisions I've made/implemented, though, because it drives me insane to see decisions made five years ago that to me seem arbitrary and harmful (I should notate, the community itself is now 22 years old; we've gone from BBS -- Prodigy -- to UBB to vB over that time) and I'd like to at least leave something in the future for folks to go "yeah, he was full of crazy" and fix where I screw up.

It can get rather bureaucratic and I despise bureaucracy, but the community enjoys consistency and stability because of it. No doubt I'll do something to shake that up in the future, though.

Opinions don't get you removed. In the end it's my call, so my members/mods opinions, while noted, won't always become a reality. If you can't cope with my style, you're out, but not for expressing an opinion. Of course, if I make a decision and a mod keeps on pestering me with the ideas that weren't accepted by me, I'd get a little unfriendly :D
