IMO, April Fool's jokes aren't valid April Fool's jokes until April 1. Pre-advertising them just makes them bogus comments. (ie: Had this actually been posted on April 1, it would have been vaguely amusing.)
That's an opinion. I personally don't care about April fools at all. But it is another opportunity to get traffic to your site and regulars and their friends to come check things out. I see MAJOR web sites every year, starting false news in March to announce april 2nd that it was april fools related. I think doing one a week premature with it being an event, set to april first .. is therefor not in poor taste or anything. But since this thread is actually about planning community stuff it's about using this week to find something interesting for everybody their site. Instead of reading posts a week from now saying: oh i forgot, and what those ppl did was pretty funny, wish i knew that beforehand! ..
Floris is you ever mention Ray Morgan and Matt in the same sentence again I will never talk to you again, ever. I had a vision of what IPB would be with Ray in charge. That vision was not good. I got to hand it to you Floris it was a good one though.

Yep. Half the staff resigned one year, and the other year we 'sold' the forums to be merged into some other site. Revolts and chaos. We also made every forum redirect to a rickroll video which featured the pictures of our staff in it
I've never done any April Fools jokes on my site... however, I think I will this year. Problem is, I think my userbase will actually get that I'm messing with them, so I need to make it good.
My issue with April Fools is it's expected and looked for now. I prefer the surprise to be unexpected if I'm going to make that kind of effort
The 4 was the thing that gave it out for me, its typography differs from the whole look, they wouldn't do that. Their site's use of fonts al look good and not "cheap". ^^
I've conspired with some of my members to pull a prank. I intentionally left out my moderators, and I have been communicating the hoax through facebook to the members I selected to help pull it off.
We've announced the upcoming feature: avatar roulette, where at random times a snapshot from their webcam is taken and used as custom avatar. Alongside an already implemented community change: We've reset the users postcount back to 0 and announced this.
