How many of you allow images in signatures on your sites?

I'm in a debate at the moment on whether we should have images in signatures. I recently had a new member join and then leave again once they found out they can't have an image in their signature. They were quite forward in telling me why they were leaving and that they thought it was a stupid rule to not allow them.

I've also noticed a lot of the members who use to frequent my forum but are now inactive, are now active on a similar forum which allows image sin the signature.. even though some of them said they didn't like images in signatures, I notice that on this other forum they have images.

Anyway... do you allow them. Do you like them?

Yes, we allow them (although we restrict signature size based on usergroup; having a larger signature is a perk for our paid subscribers and contributors). At one point a goodly number of our general discussion postings were folks looking for others to do image signatures for them or for tips in making them. For us, it's one of those small ways we like to show off (it's an RPG forum, so it's also a good thing along with avatars to distinguish characters).

Currrently here we don't allow signatures - that's because there's no way of setting limitations in place and I think there's nothing worse than a huge signature image at the bottom of a two line post. If we find a way to be able to restrict sizes, this could change.

set a min-height on the entire signature with an overflow of auto, so that you get 50px of sig showing and you have to scroll if it's bigger? Or simply hard limit in css how big the image can be with width and height?

I'd rather go for a method that doesn't involve more coding - at least while we're updating often with the betas :D

I really don't see the point in having/allowing images in signatures. It serves one purpose imo, and that is to distract from the more important aspect of the page and that's content. There's nothing worse than brightly coloured signatures no matter they're limited size when they're displaying in every post if the member happens to be active, efficiently distracting you from the content. It's an unnecessary focus point imo.

I don't and will never allow images in signatures on my site. It's something I stick by and will never budge from.

Im currently allowing them but it seems videos would be more problematic than images on my forum. I currently have Xbox Live and PSN cards under the signature area and they use a large image, I am considering making them icons rather than huge cards.

We're a gaming forum, and a big part of our reputation came with Schot building sick looking sigs that our [D.a.r.k] Clan members could use on the site's game (Ogame) we used to support.

In fact, we made a kind of "factory" for sig makers and avatar makes to promote their services to people using our forum, peeps would post saying they needed a sig or what not, and someone would jump in and create.

Creativity is amazing for the posting business, it's great if you can get it to work for your community this way.

I understand though why some forums don't allow pix, but for me, it's never been a case of whether it's right or wrong...simply the distinction between cherry or cookie dough ice cream.

Both create different "feels", it's up to the owner to decide what he wants to be around all day, it's his forum.

    :)

Whether I allow them is very much dependent on the type of site. I don't allow any sort of signature on my corporate sites but I do allow static, size restricted images on my community and gaming sites.

Some sites I have allowed them and others I haven't.

Usually when I allow them though I put in the rules what size the signature block is allowed to be and I usually know by eye how big it should be so if I see it any bigger then that then I take out some stuff and leave a staff edit in their sig.

This did give me an idea though for my first IPB and XF addon.

I found an addon for XF, don't know if it's still supported and it doesn't do it per usergroup (starting on my own atm actually that will have per usergroup).

I used to allow them until they were abused - I am attempting to find a way to restrict signature sizes and to admins/staff only so that we can have a link or something in our signature to the rules page or a special competition that we want people to know about.

If it's an IP.Board forum then you have settings built into it to limit image size, amount of lines, etc.

It used to be an IP.Board but we have now gone to xenForo and learning our way around there before converting our big site over.
