Hey guys Godaddy has just sent us notice that one of our urls will soon need to be renewed three months from now. Last time this happened we found much better pricing with namecheap, and moved from Godaddy to namecheap in a few hours at a vasty renewed price. I'm just wondering how long you guys renew urls for. We're looking at five years now for some of our names, with Namecheap beating out Godaddy plus coupon by ten dollars. Any of you buying urls long term...is it worth it, any cons? gogo
One year on purchase and 3 on renewal. I rarely renew for longer. I'm loyal to Godaddy. I moved my sites there from Netsol a couple years ago and I couldn't be happier. For the few dollars I might save it's just not worth moving from registrar to registrar to take advantage of any deals.
I buy the .com/net/org (if available) when starting a new site, then I only renew the .com if I see the .net and .org have no traffic.
I normally renew for 1 year, as that's all I can afford. If I am particularly flush with cash then I will go for 2 years. Most of my domains are with godaddy, but I tend to use other registrars for new domains as they are far cheaper.
2 years for SEO purposes starting out, then 1 year. I'm with you as well, moving all mine to NameCheap as they come up for renewal. Its not really a price issue for me, as much as it is Namecheap is just less cluttered and easier to use IMO.
The longest I have renewed for in the past was 6 years but normally I will register them for one year at first and then for an extra year if the site is doing well about half way through the first year. When renewing it is normally for one extra year at a time.
I register for 2 years as this seems to be the standard option and looks reasonably priced. I use lcn.com (low costnames) as I have found their service to be exceptional.
Hey Barry This is actually the first time I've heard of that company. Exceptional because everything moves through clearly and fast, or is there extra elements offered that maybe namecheap and godaddy don't offer? gogo
For my personal sites domain, I will start renewing it for a couple of years in advanced, every other domain I renew i for a year at a time.
If it's a business venture, three to six years for the most part. If we're talking about something fun, or a side project, I'll usually renew for two years. I generally only register and renew domains for long periods of time if I'm absolutely certain that I'll be "in it" for the long-haul.
It's seems I'm out on my own here as I go for 10 years through my host provider. It works out considerably cheaper doing that way and there's never a risk of missing a renewal.
Usually 2 years. This is for two reasons... 1 - domain age is better on your pagerank at least according to Google. 2 - I don't want to register for too long in case I don't continue the domain's site or niche. In this day and age, saving money and space is required, so if I feel the site isn't going to work--i don't want to hang on to its domain for 5 or 10 years.
We're going to up our ante as well, and are looking at three year renewal for our wiki and forum... maybe even more if we can get significant discounts. Btw guys, what do any of you think about paying that extra service charge to move all your urls together to the same date. Anyone here tried it, is it worth it? gogo
