I called HostGator and told them I wished to cancel my hosting with them about 2 months ago due to not needing there services.

I checked my emails the other day and saw I had two invoices from them for my hosting, up on contacting them they have said I did not cancel my hosting and that I need to pay for something I have not been using for 2 months.

Any ideas on what to do?

How did you contact them? You have to open a support ticket to close an account - I've done that a number of times without any problems at all.

I did it over the phone and was told it was all sorted.

Contact them and say that if they do not completely cancel your account, you will report/sue them for attempted fraud. It's the only thing that worked for me :\

Always open a ticket for stuff like this. That way there is always a record of everything.

Agreed, a 'paper trail'is always needed to prove what has taken place.

Making a phone calll leaves you with nothing so I reckon you may have to cough up.

I'm not paying. Even though it only works out too $16 ish.

I'm not paying it because there staff are incompetent at doing there job.

Put in a support ticket explaining you cancelled by phone - make sure you submit all details (date you cancelled, who you spoke to, etc).

When you spoke with them over the phone, did the representative happen to provide you with a reference or case number for just such an occasion? If they did, and if you still have said number, be sure to include this somewhere within the ticket when submitting it. As frustrating as this matter may be, there really is no iron-clad proof that the cancellation of your account was completed on their end unless it was specified somewhere "in writing".

Best of luck in resolving this.

They did this to me when I was with them. I purchase hosting using prepaid credit cards, I only put what I need to pay on the card. When host gator tried to be slow about canceling me, I just simply closed the card. Then started getting emails about not paying, I told them that is because I canceled, they finally got it and closed it...

Don't let companies push you around... HostGator is one of the worst hosting services I have ever used... took me 3 months to get them to approve my domain transfer to my current host I left them for. I finally had to send an email with a bunch of profanity to get them to do their jobs lol.

I love that! Never thought of doing that, it's so safe, and you never worry about them secretly hoarding your Credit card number.

    Nice one Shawn
