It might be for the short term. They may be able to recover in the future. Someone posted this over at XenForo:
Thing is they haven't actually said they don't oppose SOPA only that it currently does not meet the requirements they feel it should.
The image I tried posted actually shows that they are now announcing that they oppose it. See here: http://xenforo.com/community/threads/did-you-leave-godaddy.25281/#post-307291
Yes, I saw it But if you read the statement by Warren Adelman carefully, he doesn't say they oppose it at all:- He simply says it doesn't fulfil its basic requirement and are withdrawing support. That is not the same as saying they oppose the Act.
http://www.godaddy.com/newscenter/release-view.aspx?news_item_id=379 (emphasis mine) Oh I dunno... still sounds like with a few word changes, they could go back to supporting it.
I've been away from net/real life for some days now, this kind of news with SOPA devastes me I remember when BIG telecoms in Canada tried to stomp out all the small private ISP's by changing pricing tactics, and a new group called Open Media here in Canada sprouted up... in days we had the largest petition every created all duly signed and in stolidly in the way of encroaching horror. I hope something like that would be possible in the face of SOPA as well? gogo
Meh, they just need a new sexy commercial with ladies saying that Go Daddy doesn't support SOPA so it's okay to stay with them and all will be well.
"GoDaddy, no longer supporting SOPA, and now with four times the cleavage" might influence things quite a bit.
In my eyes, GoDaddy's initial support for these bills was to know that they may be able to thin out their own competition to the realms of the legal system. They advertise on Superbowl commercials, so they have the money to spend in legal battles... However, once the public outrage came in, including big time websites like Wikipedia saying they would transfer every domain they have away from GoDaddy... Then GoDaddy realized they sharted in their own pants by supporting SOPA and PIPA and now everyone knows it. They should of known word travels really fast on the internet... I feel no sympathy for GoDaddy... They seem to piss everyone off! If its not with SOPA, its with killing elephants, if its not with that, its with feminists angry about hot women and sexual ideologies being used in their commercials... Honestly.... eventually, I see GoDaddy digging themselves in such a deep hole that they eventually bury themselves in it and as a result, will fade away far away from the hosting industry... that is my prediction anyways
If you read the initial agreement, GoDaddy would have preferential treatment on obtaining domains confiscated by SOPA.
