I............................don't like it, sorry. I mean, it doesn't *bother* me either way, but I much preferred the raw simplicity of "Like". I think here we're back down the road of making things convoluted and confusing again, which is what buggered up a lot of forums in the first place, and which XF has gone some way to rectifying. In short, it's confusing clutter. Sorry.
Totally agree. Just like with facebook and default XenForo, people see the 'Like' button and are immediately thinking, "did I like this: yes or no?" and then can decide to either click it or not. Now....they see all these different buttons and are thinking, "WTF is all this shit?" It now becomes a chore to decide which freaking button to click. KISS.
This is why we always perform trial runs of things Bear in mind, it's curently running at its default settings, but we're hoping to take things on a slight different path with it - by having specific "like" options in specific areas. That way we can keep the majority of the site as the simple "like" only.
It's not what I would call confusing, but a valid concern I had myself because the xenforo like system is beautifully implemented and features, placement of the like system, with conjunction of the alerts is prity much perfect and most importantly clean. On paper, post ratings sounds like the perfect marriage made in heaven but the reality is, I personally think bringing down lists becomes tedious and too much work, conveying each icon perfectly so people understand them at a glance hasn't been perfected which is why i think this is an alternative not a replacement. Actually, I can see your point how it could become confusing but since I'm working with it you get to know the little quirks with it. Clutter was always my concern but mainly, retaining the clean look and the ability to keep things simple and easy for people to understand on the chance more icons, rating criteria is added.
+1 It was one thing to like a post. Now I'm trying to figure out how to like a post with mustard and onion, but hold the pickle.
I think this is one of those add-ons you just have to experiment with and see if it works and members take to it in the hope it also compliments the community it's catered for. That has failed it's starting to fall into the category of a extended feature "you thought you wanted and needed" but you actually didn't. No disrespect to the author he's a very talented guy but xenforo integrated the default so well it was always going to be in my mind an extended feature that at least had to rival it if not surpass it in many areas which it doesn't. That said, I still think this add-on is so versatile it can be adapted to be used as a gift type of system of some sort integrating it with trophies possibly but as it stands now it's not doing much for me now that we've giving it a run on a live site. I suppose another workaround would be to be creative in the way of the type of criteria you set vs icons that convey the custom criteria. I'm thinking out loud.
I honestly think it should go. This site is a professional site and it kind of cheapens it. It's just silly teenage stuff. The "Like" system built into XF is just SO perfect that there doesn't seem any point to changing into this....it's just....ugh.....sorry....
I actually think it's something I could use on one of my sites. I do agree up to a point that it's perhaps something that benefits some sites more than others. Whether or not it's right for this site I'm honestly not sure either way.
At most, there should really only be 3 positive, 3 negative, and one neutral option. Even that is pushing it, but at least if you break down and organize them in a logical way it won't be as confusing for people. Like, Agree, Thanks, Neutral, Dislike, Disagree, Brick to Face
Great feedback from all of you. I think we'll give it another few days before making a final decision on whether to keep it or not
One thing I would say is that I'm not a fan of systems that allow negative awards. Constructive criticism has a hundred fold more value than negative karma, dislikes or dare I say it, being awarded the forum turd. If someone likes my content then I'm encouraged to return but if they dislike it without comment I want to know why. Negativity in general breeds more negativity and before you know it your members are at each other's throats, often for no reason than a negative karma award. If you do keep the system, keep it positive and let members express criticisms in words
If it's removed, would posts that were liked under this new system remain or would all that feedback get removed?
I actually like it, and I think once it matures a bit you'll see why it's a great thing. This modification reminds me so much of the system they have at slashdot for comments. I purchased this as soon as I saw it installed here and got to play with it. I plan on making some modifications to it and using it for certain areas on my forum/site. I'll be using a system where posts which are highly rated by other club members will be visible, and lower rated posts will be collapsed and must be clicked on to see. This way, the meat of the discussion can be seen at a glance while the chit-chat remains in the background. Users will be able to view all the comments on one go though, by choosing what type of posts they wish to load by default based on rating. I'm not saying that it works here, or for every site, but for certain applications it's very useful to have around.
