Okay, this is something that really bugs the shit out of me. People whom (not so much double post) several times of them doing this you can certainly forgive but members who constantly, consistently triple, quadruple post in threads that post nothing but utter garbage which leads me to think they do this to boost their postcount. Another reason I find this irritating is because it takes up a vast amount of thread real estate when it could all be condensed into one post by simply using the quote/edit button. Quoting for when they want to quote various people within the thread and edit for when the unlikey likely scenario "oops i forgot to quote mr x because I'm not a rocket scientist" so they would go back to editing then quote the post. So what are your thoughts on this kind of pathetic behavior? Is this just sloppy downright laziness or a claim to fame in boosting they're postcount that they hold dear to them? What would be your way of dealing with this? Ps, I really can't stand this and if I were admin I would personally merge their postings (I use the term loosely) and merge them into one super thread and if feeling irritated probably delete it or hide it in the test area.
hehehe you're so mean I will occasionally not go back and edit a post, simply adding a new one. Usually it's because I'm convinced it'll auto merge But I'm not a fan either of four or five consecutive posts made by the same person because they keep finding things they want to reply to but can't use the quote BBCode to edit their existing post
I think it is a result of some users who are unable to differentiate between short text social mediums, like text messages on their phone & Twitter, with traditional discussion mediums like forums. When they see something that they like it is now normal practice for them to respond immediately with a quick response, even if it is just a "yes" nod in agreement, instead of waiting a bit to give input into the conversation as a whole instead of just bits of it. It is the forum version of hitting "retweet" for them.
It depends on the situation... If you have a reason for multiple posts (My design post for example), I'd say its fine. In situations where you just do it out of laziness, I find it annoying and just a cause of post inflation. Certain users over at XenForo do this, and it drives me crazy as the majority of their posts provide nothing of value. Theres a like feature, if you agree, use it. If not, post a detailed post of why you do not agree. Anything else is spam, idiotic, and deserves a rebuke from staff. This is one reason I barely use Twitter... I dislike cutting down my responses as a lot tends to get lost in smaller messages.
I suppose to some extent it depends on the posting rate of the forum, at least it does for me. To give you an example, one of my forums has a ridiculously fast post rate. To put it in some context, a thread might gain something like ten posts a minute. While I would personally prefer to multi-quote and/or edit, I know that my content would likely start to lose context as further replies are made while I mash out my reply. Under most circumstances, I certainly agree and I find that kind of behaviour often goes hand in hand with text-speak and/or poor grammar. The only way I can think of dealing with it is to remove post counts or perhaps a private pm explaining how to make better use of the forum features.
I usually don't like it when people double or triple post. That's why there is an edit button. Also that's one reason why I love IPB (don't know if XF has this feature), it merges posts after a set amount of time.
KW802, that is an amazing explanation, I would never have thought of this reason! And Rev, you're right, IPB's merge after we set it for a set amount of minutes is genius. gogo
I tend to compose walls of text, so if I'm making multiple posts in a row, it's usually the result of a series of presentation spew posts or the like. If you merged them I think you'd kill several kittens and maybe a few small children in the ensuing chaos. However, seeing a bunch of one-liner posts from the same person, one after the other... Granted, I get irritable and OCD when people in my IRC server can't even manage a complete sentence before hitting enter. I have a couple friends that do this and it tempts me to go into my configuration and crank down the buffer limit.
