Do you have a copyright notice on your community? Who owns the content? For Admin Extra, content remains the property of the person who posted it and copyright of the material belongs to them.

I know of some communities that have a statement that everything posted belongs to the site and they have copyright over it, effectively disallowing you to post your content elsewhere. Do you agree with this (are you even aware of it happening on a site you post at)?

I agree with the website owning the posted content if it was owned by the original poster, obviously music and such if attached wouldnt be owned by the website/website owner. The main reason I believe in it is because people will just request for their content to be removed and I wont do that in any circumstances unless it was serious for example they were being stalked online or something like that. I hate how petty people out there who will contribute loads will say I want all my posts removed because they own them and thats why I would never say it is theirs because if you own something you have every right to do with it as you please and I wouldnt want to remove say 1000+ posts because someone has taken a huff or because they are no longer interested in the forum.

I wouldnt expect that here and most places myself and I would hope you would tell me where to go if I asked for all my content to be deleted :D

To be honest, I don't count that in with copyright. I would say if you post something somewhere then you still retain the copyright (as in ownership) but give the site the right to host the information for as long as they deem fit.

Oh I see what youre saying now there, well for me I dont really care so much who owns copyright, if it was an article or something then I might be wanting to retain that but not for forum posts.

Technically though, if someone owns copyright over their posts, doesnt that give them a right to have them removed as you as the host would be illegally hosting their copyrighted content against their wishes?

No, because they willingly posted it to begin with and (at least here we will once I've got it back in place) it will be stated somewhere that the OP retains copyright but gives yoursite.com the right to hold/distribute the content on their site.

Thinking on this a bit more, you could say that the OP has given over a limited copyright to the site they're posting on, but retained ownership.

In Germany you can't sell or give up copyright of your own content. Law isn't arranged for that. You only can offer or sell the right to use it. Therefore I have in my rules that I'm allowed to use content, that is posted and the poster has copyright of, endlessly. I see it as Michael, I don't want to delete content.

No, I have none apart from using the default that comes with the forum software. It's just a forum used for discussion and nothing much more. I know some forum owners who go way, way, way over the top creating silly disclamers making a huge big deal of their forum board. I mean, come on, seriously, it's just a forum not a top secret nuclear base in Area 57!

It's also a real turn-away when seeing forums doing it, put's you off them right away because you can see they take things too seriously by far.

And it doesn't stop other sites coming along stealing your content to post on their own site either, not like some forum owners seem to believe it does. Who even bothers reading a forum disclaimer anyhow most of the time?

Why when I edit my post do I keep seeing more and more of these lines appearing each time I re-edit (highlighted in yellow). My forum doesn't do that using XenForo.
